This month I spent another week away for my Arts Tasmania residency.
One of my projects is to write new material for a Dutch/English release, so on day three and four of this 2nd week of my residency I decided to put music to the lyrics ‘Ongeschreven Brief' ('Unwritten Letter'), which I had written last month.
I'm loving what it has become: a heartfelt, sincere song with plenty of dramatic scope, courtesy of a musical-theatre interpretation of the lyrics.
I chose to slightly alter the text, mostly at the end of the song, where it is now revealed that the letter was actually never written or sent - knowing that the love that it intended to convey would not have been received.
The song is definitely bitter-sweet, articulating the sentiment of relationally holding back, while knowing you would move mountains for the other person to be able to receive your love. It conveys this duality from a grounded place of acceptance, allowing sincerity of intent to come through.
I ran the original lyrics past one or two people in my world and the response was so encouraging, that I decided this one was worth putting to music, for the way it might connect with listeners.
You can read the lyrics, and more on the theme in an earlier post, which I've updated so that it contains the definitive lyrics.
I'm not sure what the turnaround time will be on getting this recorded and released, but it will be gorgeous when it does come out.
