It’s a brand new year, so I thought I would look at some of the stats on my songwriting over the last four years:
Songwriting Stats 2021 & 2022
| Songs started and finished in 2021-2022 | 51 |
| Songs started pre-2021, finished in 2021-2022 | 0 |
| Songs started in 2021-2022, unfinished | 49 + |
| Songs released | 0 |
Personal favourite? Impossible to choose… I wrote such good material during these two years, including songs for my one woman show, the three singles that I released in 2024, material for my upcoming 2025 album release and some incredible songs in Dutch and English that have not been played, recorded or shared. They’re sitting on my shelf like preserves in the pantry, ready for when I need them.

Again, too many new songs to choose a favourite. I wrote more songs for my one woman show and it’s impossible to pick a favourite from among those. I continued writing in Dutch, with two standouts: “Voor Mij Bestemd” and “Nooit Te Laat”, both gorgeous songs. Other favourites include: “Dancing Shoes” and “Bandit of Grace”.
Songwriting in 2025
I have written and completed at least 74 songs in the last four years. Bearing in mind that I create a piano/vocal score for each of my completed songs, this represents a lot of work. Where in 2021/2022 the ratio of finished songs to unfinished songs was roughly 1:1, for 2023/2024 that ratio is 1:3. There are various reasons for this shift, some of them practical, some of them artistic.
With well over 100 unfinished songs written in the last four years alone, my focus for 2025 will be to bring some of these across the finish line. There are some incredible songs among these, and I aim to complete about 5-10% of these songs this year. Currently I am finishing the score for “Zingend Ben Ik Vrij”, which is a theatrical, empowering and slightly epic song about finding freedom in being (by) yourself.
I look forward to sharing more of my songs, snippets of songs and songwriting process as this year unfolds. If you’re keen to get the behind the scenes on my songwriting process, let me know through the contact form, as I’m looking at creating a space where I can share with a smaller group of people.
There will also be a jazz/blues album release this year, as well as continued work on the libretto for my one woman show, of course.
As you can see, I’ve got more songs than I could ever possibly record, so if you’re an artist looking for songs, I’d love to hear from you.
Happy New Year!
